Negative painting is an exercise in trust. Rather than painting the subject itself, we slowly reveal it by adding layers around it. Each wash asks us to pause, look ahead, and allow the image to emerge naturally.
In Earth Archetype, overlapping leaves and seed pods are gradually uncovered through successive layers of watercolor. The composition grows one shape at a time, each new layer defining the next until the foliage appears woven together like an ancient forest tapestry.
Using a limited palette of earthy greens, warm ochres, and muted neutrals creates harmony while allowing subtle variations in value and texture to become the true focus. Instead of depicting a specific plant, the forms become symbols of nature itself—growth, resilience, renewal, and the quiet beauty found in every season.

This is a super fun yet challenging piece. You will learn how to paint using the negative painting technique.

Most supplies can be purchased at your local art supply store, Amazon, and a hardware store. If you choose not to use Amazon, Blick is also a great place to purchase art supplies.

This is done in stages and since you are painting around an object it can take longer than you think. Plus we go back in and add details. Depending on your determination…LOL this can be done in one day, possibly a few hours.
No really… this is a fun relaxing project if you are able to focus and enjoy the process. My suggestion is to always watch the videos first before you begin. Setting up in advance is very important. You will be using paper cutouts for tracing..so this can be done before you begin.
