Interlude – Spirit of the Dance is a mixed-media art project where we’ll paint an elegant ballerina lost in thought, capturing the quiet stillness and spirit that breathe life into her dance.

Using soft watercolor washes, you’ll bring her to life through delicate skin tones, the rich detail of her burgundy bodice, and the flowing layers of her tutu, balancing translucence with texture.

By the end of the class, you’ll have your own version of Interlude—a painting that celebrates the pause between movements, where the dance itself listens for its soul.

We’ll add dimension with splashes, speckles, and layered effects that create a dreamy, expressive atmosphere. You’ll also explore mixed-media accents—such as beadwork and stitching—that deepen the contrast between her quiet stillness and the sense of movement that surrounds her.

FAQS

What techniques will I learn in this course?

This is a simple yet slightly complex watercolor course. You will learn how to:

Use a rake brush
Create wispy feathers
Use cold wax as sealer
Learn to make a beaded flower, embroider simple leaves (not that simple) and make french knots
Attach feathers using heavy matte gel medium

Will I need special equipment?

Optional – heat gun or blow dryer

Where can I buy my supplies?

Most supplies can be purchased at your local art supply store, Amazon, and a hardware store. If you choose not to use Amazon, Blick is also a great place to purchase art supplies.

If you would like to use my watercolors, you can purchase them on Rippledwaves.com. I also have a limited set of watercolor brushes that I use available.

About how long will it take me to complete this project?

The painted part can take maybe 2 hours depending on your skill level. For the beading and stitching part, this can take another 1-2 hours depending on your skill level.

Is there anything else you teach in this course?

The bonus section is the beading and stitching. There is also another added part for adding feathers to the dress.
